Student Documentary "Babas" Featured at U.S. High School Film Fest

MSS Academy PM student Flora Jewell was recently interviewed by All American High School Film Festival (AAHSFF) moderator Maria Levak, after "BABAS," the film Flora directed, was featured as one of the documentaries screened from October 16th to October 18th, 2026 at the AMC Empire 25 Theaters in Times Square in New York City.

In the interview, Flora explains that BABAS is an homage to Doukhobor grandmothers, and describes the filmmaking process, what inspired the story, and what it means to present the documentary at this high-profile 2026 school film festival.

Flora emphasizes that most of the film-making team behind BABAS are Doukhobor grandchildren themselves, and the documentary tells a story about grandmothers that will resonate with everyone who has, knows or is a grandmother who cares for, nurtures and inspires grandchildren.

Other MSS films featured at the AAHSFF include "Beyond Human" by Foster Elder, "Best Laid Plans" by Murrin Elizabeth Lynne Gingras, and "Hidden Heroes" by Lily Ulrich.

The All American High School Film Festival was founded in 2003 "to provide immersive education with a profound impact, connecting the filmmakers of the future with the rewards, respect and recognition they deserve." While the majority of entries are from the U.S., it is open to high school films from across North America and the world.

Congratulations to Flora and the entire BABAS team: Logan Koochin, Mischa Gretchen, Kail Westlind, Kat Matter and Weston Sapriken. A big shout out to Foster, Murrin, and Lily too. An incredibly strong showing for Academy PM students!
