Superintendent's Report - June 2023

Another school year is coming to completion - June is one of the most exciting months of the year for everyone in SD8.

In June, we see students showcase their efforts and accomplishments throughout the school year - in capstone projects, in school theatre productions, in school-wide projects to protect the oceans or mark the Seven Sacred Teachings or in outdoor sports during and after school, including in the annual wuqanqankimik run/walk/wheel for Reconciliation.

May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit Peoples (MMIWG2S). It is also known as Red Dress Day. May 1 to 7 is the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Mental Health Week. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month across North America. This report includes articles related to each of these events.

Superintendent's Report - April 2023

April is a great time to reconnect with one another after spring break, and to reengage with our individual and collective purpose: to support and realize the success of each of our learners as we begin the final three months of the 2022-2023 school year.

In that spirit of engagement, I am excited to share results from our strategic plan engagement process in this month's superintendent's report.

Highlights of the process include:

Superintendent's Report - March 2023

A sense of community, an ability to embrace kindness towards oneself and toward others and feeling the joy of physical movement – these are three themes that you will see in this March report. These are also important elements for each child to excel in school and in life.

Spring building - Bird Houses and More

Woodworking 9 to 12 class with Mr. Shaw has been busy exploring the design and build cycle with new and returning students to the program.  Mr. Shaw was able to secure a donation of cedar wood - a material ideal for small exploratory projects including bird houses and bat houses.

MYP Museum Night - A Celebration of Learning

Our MYP will be hosting a Night at the Museum and you are invited! Students will be showcasing their project work and being your museum tour guides as you see what your child has been up to in school! Their binders will also be in their classroom for you to see so that you have another chance to celebrate your child’s growth and support them in their school experience. Finally, you will have an opportunity to meet and chat with your child’s teachers to gain more insight into their learning and progress at school.

Is It A Dance Floor or The Woodshop?

Thank you to our operations and maintenance department for finding time, despite the long list of jobs they have, to sand and varnish our woodshop floor.  Mr. Shaw and his students were so excited to return to find the shiny floor.  It was all hands on deck to return worktables and equipment back in place to resume the design and build cycle in the woodshop.  Thank you, James, our shop looks new again!

End of Term Foods Cook-Off

Ms. Skand’s Foods 9/10 class was busy preparing for the end of quarter 1 and the end of their Italian cooking unit. The culminating demonstration of learning was the popular “cook-off.” The chef’s enjoyed preparing chicken marinara, spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, risotto, Italian soda and tiramisu to name just a few of the dishes.  The staff food judges especially enjoyed sampling “cibo delizioso” and providing feedback to the chefs.
