The Sequoia Learning Centre is an alternate education program within the Slocan Valley Family of Schools in School District 8. Sequoia is an off-site program, part of Mt. Sentinel Secondary School.
What is Alternate Education?
Alternate education programs focus on providing educational, social, and emotional support for students who face increased barriers in the traditional school program. This is accomplished through a variety of inclusive practices such as differentiated instruction, specialized program delivery, and enhanced counseling services based on students’ needs. The goal of the program is to provide students with life-changing and empowering educational, physical, social, and emotional experiences and opportunities as they work towards graduation.
What does Sequoia offer?
Sequoia is designed for students in grades 10-12 who are working towards graduation. The program offers a small, quiet environment where students work towards achieving their goals in various ways. In addition to academics, we focus on life skills like cooking, financial literacy, communication, outdoor recreation, relationship skills, and other cross-curricular assignments designed to foster student connection to themselves and the world around them in a meaningful way.
How does a student enroll in Sequoia?
Families may advocate for their child to attend Sequoia by contacting the principal of Mt. Sentinel Secondary School. Additionally, students may be referred to Sequoia through the School Based Team at Mt. Sentinel or the School District 8, District Based Team. Students attending Sequoia complete an application form and participate in an intake process with a parent or caregiver.
